Will Nuclear War Happen?

Today is the 75th anniversary of an atomic bomb devastating Nagasaki, Japan. Three days earlier in 1945, the first atomic bomb used in warfare was dropped on Hiroshima. Historians have debated whether the United States was justified in using those bombs. It’s tragic how the bombings killed tens of thousands of people. However, many more lives would have been lost had the U.S. needed to invade the country that four years earlier initiated hostilities with the attack on Pearl Harbor. President Truman’s goal for authorizing the bombings was to convince the Japanese to surrender and bring a quicker end to World War II.

I grew up during the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. Fears of a nuclear exchange were triggered by watching made-for-TV movies like “World War III” and “The Day After.” Although the USSR dissolved in 1991, Russia still has nukes as well as a few other countries. Rogue nations like Iran have made progress in developing their own weapons of mass destruction. It’s scary to think about what would happen if they follow through on their numerous threats against Israel and the West.

However, I believe prayer plus a strong military has protected the United States and other countries from a nuclear attack. God wants to bring in a large end-time harvest of souls. Things will be different once the church is raptured. 1 Thessalonians 5:2-3 says, “For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, ‘Peace and safety!’ then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape.”

Certain Scriptures some scholars have considered symbolic could be descriptions of a nuclear conflict. Revelation 6:12-13 says, “I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood. And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind.” The “stars from heaven” could be missiles from space.

Zechariah 14:12 gives an accurate description of someone exposed to an atomic explosion: “And this shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the people who fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh shall dissolve while they stand on their feet, Their eyes shall dissolve in their sockets, And their tongues shall dissolve in their mouths.” This and similar prophecies could be about the Battle of Armageddon or another future conflict like the war of Gog and Magog in Ezekiel 38.

Do these scenarios frighten you? They shouldn’t if you know Jesus. Psalm 91:7 says,“A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you.” God knows how to protect His people. If you are uncertain of your eternal destiny, don’t delay getting your life right with the Lord. Tomorrow may be too late.

The Six-Day War...50 Years Later

Tomorrow will be the golden anniversary of a noteworthy event relating to end-time prophecy. On June 5th, 1967, Israel launched attacks on six neighboring countries that amassed troops near their borders threatening invasion. The war ended just five days later. Despite being heavily outnumbered, Israel routed her enemies and possessed additional territory including the eastern half of Jerusalem. For the first time in 2,000 years, the entire city was in Jewish hands.

Since the Six-Day War, Israel has given up some of her territory in hopes of lasting peace with her neighbors. Shortly after the Gaza Strip was turned over to the Palestinians in 2005, rockets from there were fired upon Jewish settlements. The PLO’s charter still calls for the destruction of Israel.

This past week, President Donald Trump delayed his promise in moving the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the eternal capital of the Jewish people. According to a White House statement, this was done “to maximize the chances of successfully negotiating a deal between Israel and the Palestinians.” Well-meaning politicians need to wake up to the fact you cannot negotiate with terrorists.

There will be a temporary peace in the Middle East when the Antichrist oversees the signing of a seven-year treaty (Daniel 9:27). Ultimately, war will cease in this region once the Lord Jesus Christ returns to see up His Millennial reign upon the earth. 

Are you ready for His return?

“And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it.” - Zechariah 12:3

When the Towers Fell

Today on the fifteenth anniversary of 9/11, many people can still recall where they were and what they were doing during that tragic day. On that Tuesday morning, the Lord led me to do street ministry in Springfield, Virginia (at the time I was living in the nearby city of Manassas). The first two people I prayed with were teenaged boys on their way to school. Later while browsing around a Barnes & Noble bookstore, I overheard someone talk about a plane crash. I figured if it was something serious, I would later hear about it on the news.

Not long afterward, I walked into an electronics store and noticed people crowded around a big-screen TV. It was then I heard about the planes crashing into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon (which is only ten miles from Springfield)! Increased boldness came upon me and I altered my evangelism approach for the rest of the day. First I asked people if they heard what just happened in New York City and Washington, DC. Then I asked if they would be in heaven had they perished in one of those attacks. Sadly, many of them were still oblivious to their need for salvation. One man in a military uniform walked away from me without saying a word. Fortunately, five more people prayed to get born again including folks originally from France, India, and Romania.

The next morning, the Lord woke me up at 4:00 a.m. and told me to go back to Springfield to do more evangelism. That day I prayed with eleven people to receive salvation. One in particular was by far the most memorable. When I returned to Barnes & Noble, the instrumental music playing in the background caught my attention. I asked an employee about it and we got into a lengthy conversation. Jaime was a Spanish immigrant who was very friendly and we eventually talked about the terrorist attacks. I found out Jaime literally saw the plane crash into the Pentagon on his way to work! He then asked why God would allow things like that happen to good people. I explained to Jaime that it’s the devil that influences people to kill, steal, and destroy (John 10:10). Jaime later prayed to get born again. It was definitely a divine appointment.

There were people I knew who had close calls related to the events of 9/11…

* The wife of my then-pastor worked at the Pentagon. Her office was in the very same section that was hit by the plane, which stopped one wall short of where she was sitting! Fortunately she didn't experience serious injuries.

* The father of a friend of mine in Virginia also worked at the Pentagon. He planned on getting cash at an ATM machine where the plane later hit. This man changed his mind at the last minute. That decision saved his life.

* Two ladies I know who lived and worked at Calvary Campground in Ashland, Virginia took a trip to New York and made plans to tour the World Trade Center on the evening of September 11. It was a good thing they didn't go there earlier that day before the planes hit.

* On the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance (September 14, 2001) declared by President George W. Bush, I felt led to call a friend of mine who lived in the Philadelphia area. Ellen told me a couple we both knew was visiting her and had ministered at a New York church the Sunday before. This couple originally planned on staying in New York two more days to do some sightseeing. But the wife felt a strong prompting to get out of New York sooner.

The next time a horrific event like 9/11 happens, use that as an opportunity to share the gospel with people. Some individuals need a serious wake-up call to realize their lives can suddenly end without warning. One minister I know in New York often says, “Meet your Maker before you meet your undertaker!”

A Deal With Destruction

Romans 12:18 says we should aim to “live peaceably among all men.” However, that’s not always possible. Until the Lord Jesus Christ returns to set up His millennial kingdom, there will always be people influenced by demons who seek to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10).

This past Tuesday, President Obama announced a deal made with Iran that will supposedly curb their ambitions to make a nuclear weapon. Known officially as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the agreement would give Iran 24 days (not hours) to prepare for U. S.-led inspections of their nuclear facilities. This is comparable to a drug dealer given three weeks notice before the police search his home for illegal substances. Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu called the deal a “bad mistake of historic proportions.” Bible prophecy expert Perry Stone wrote on Facebook this “...may be the stupidest agreement with any nation, ever penned on paper...at least in my lifetime.”

This echoes an infamous treaty made in 1938. British prime minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich Agreement with Adolf Hitler and declared, “I have returned from Germany with peace for our time.” A year later, Hitler's armies triggered the start of World War II by invading Poland. Chamberlain’s successor Winston Churchill later said, “An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last.”

Since their Islamic revolution in 1979, Iran has sponsored terrorist activities around the world including countless murders of American military personnel, diplomats, foreign aid workers and other civilians. Nevertheless, Iran will receive $150 billion in “sanctions relief” while they continue to hold American citizens captive.

Just as Hitler was vocal about his intentions toward European Jews and Christians, Iranian leaders have made repeated declarations to “wipe Israel off the map” and encourage their citizens to chant “Death to America!” This nuclear deal may help set the stage for an end times war prophesied in Ezekiel 38. Persia (the former name of Iran) is mentioned in verse 5 as one of the nations that will unsuccessfully attempt to conquer Israel.

Barring an Israeli airstrike or Congress blocking this deal, it will be a matter of time before Iran will be capable of exploding a nuclear missile over U. S. airspace. The resulting electromagnetic pulse could take out the nation’s power grid and disable our infrastructure. Some experts predict nine out of ten Americans would die within a year following an EMP attack. 1 Thessalonians 5:3 says, “For when they say, ‘Peace and safety!’ then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape.”

Regardless of the present state of the world, protection and provision are available to God’s people. Make sure you are in right relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. You certainly don’t want to leave earth without Him!

The Right Place at the Right Time

Last November, I took a trip to Boston, Massachusetts. I perceived the Lord wanted me there since I was getting all kinds of “Boston” signs (such as this paper cutter used at a church in Florida). To save on lodging expenses, I stayed at a hostel for two nights but didn’t sleep well due to other guests walking in our bedroom at various times. The next night I stayed at a house church in Haverhill, Massachusetts. My hosts would have let me stay longer except they already had too many guests. Not wanting to return to the hostel, I decided to leave the Boston area and travel to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where I have friends to stay and minister with.  

During my time in Bean Town I did some sightseeing but not much evangelizing mainly because I wanted someone ministering with me. Now I wish I had done more after hearing about the Boston Marathon bombings this past Monday that left three people dead and at least 170 people injured. This tragedy reminded me of when I was in Madrid, Spain six months before the 2004 train bombings that killed 191 people and wounded close to 2,000. God only knows whom I might have ministered to affected by one or both of those terrorist attacks.

In 2004 I had another incident that showed me how our obedience to the Lord has eternal consequences for others. One night I felt a strong impression that I was supposed to head over to the University of Tampa the next day. After some initial hesitation, I finally did so in the afternoon and noticed an area roped off by the police. A man standing on top of a building was threatening to jump off!  Since I couldn’t talk to this man directly, I bound the spirits of suicide and death in Jesus’ name. Then I prayed in the Spirit until I felt a release. As I stood praying, one man came up to me and asked what was going on. I witnessed to David and he got born again.

I also recall not sleeping all that well the morning of 9/11 but still felt led of the Lord to go evangelizing that day. At the time the hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, I was in Springfield, Virginia...10 miles from the Pentagon. I mentioned those tragedies to the people I witnessed to by pointing out how our lives can suddenly end without warning. The Lord woke me up early the next day (September 12th, 2001) and instructed me to evangelize again in Springfield. One of the people I led to the Lord was a Barnes & Noble employee who the day before saw the plane crash into the Pentagon on his way to work!

Once again, it's important to follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit and be where God wants us to be. People’s eternal destinies are at stake. Every day before I leave the house, I pray “God, help me be in the right place at the right time doing the right thing with the right people and saying the right thing.” Let that be your prayer as well.

This Land Is My Land

Despite my spending much time in Florida, I never experienced a hurricane there. The only time I have was in September 2003 while staying with friends just outside Washington, DC. That month, Hurricane Isabel hit the area with high winds, torrential rains, and flooding. I questioned how a storm that like could come to the nation’s capital until seeing on TV then-President George W. Bush hosting King Abdullah of Jordan at Camp David with the purpose of discussing the so-called “road map to peace."

Over the last two decades, other disasters have occurred at the same time the U.S. government enacted foreign policy against Israel (for the latest information on this issue, check out www.watch.org). This week Hurricane Earl approached the east coast of the United States while President Obama met with Middle Eastern leaders in an attempt to negotiate a peace settlement. The President said from the White House, “I have the utmost confidence in him [Mahmoud Abbas - President of the Palestinian National Authority] and his belief in a two-state solution in which the people of Israel and the Palestinians are living side by side in peace and security.” Perhaps the President needs to be reminded of a statement made last year by Abbas, “A Jewish state, what is that supposed to mean? You can call yourselves as you like, but I don't accept it and I say so publicly.” (Source: Arab News - April 28, 2009)

When will political leaders wake up and realize you cannot negotiate with terrorists? Nonetheless, additional talks are scheduled to take place in two weeks. Therefore, we need to continue praying that the Obama Administration come to the realization that the Holy Land belongs to Israel. Trying to pressure them to give up land will bring additional judgment upon the United States.
